A Mega Millions ticket purchased in Virginia has won the estimated $348 million jackpot from the drawing held on Friday, June 27. According to lottery officials, the winning ticket correctly matched all six numbers, which includes the five white balls and the gold Mega Ball, securing one of the largest jackpots of the year.
The identity of the ticket holder has not yet been disclosed, and state officials are urging the winner to sign the back of their ticket and consult with a financial advisor before claiming the prize. The winner will have the option of receiving the full $348 million in annual payments over 30 years or opting for a one-time lump sum cash value estimated at approximately $164 million before taxes.
This marks the first time in several months that someone has won the full Mega Millions jackpot, which had been steadily increasing due to repeated rollovers from previous drawings without a jackpot winner.
The Virginia Lottery confirmed that the winning ticket was sold at a retailer within the state, sparking excitement among residents and business owners as to where the life-changing ticket may have been purchased.
Mega Millions is played in 45 states, as well as the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Odds of winning the jackpot are roughly 1 in 302.6 million.
Lottery officials remind all players to play responsibly and to check their tickets carefully, as numerous smaller prizes are also awarded in each drawing.
