The initiative, which has garnered bipartisan support, seeks to address growing concerns about the illegal export and smuggling of these high-performance chips into China.
Nvidia’s chips are central to powering a wide array of AI technologies, including chatbots, image generators, and specialized systems with potential dual-use applications such as the development of biological weapons. Due to their critical role in advancing AI capabilities, these chips have been subject to stringent U.S. export controls.
Reports have indicated that despite these controls, smuggling of Nvidia chips into restricted regions like China remains prevalent, prompting lawmakers to push for stricter verification measures.
