Spotify Gains Apple Approval to Share Pricing and Payment Info in U.S. App

Spotify revealed on Friday that Apple has approved an update to its app in the United States, allowing the music streaming company to provide users with subscription pricing details and offer links to external payment methods.

This development marks a significant shift in Apple’s long-standing App Store policies, which traditionally limited how apps could communicate pricing details and alternative billing options outside of Apple’s in-app purchase system. Spotify has been one of the most vocal critics of these policies, previously accusing Apple of anti-competitive behavior.

The app update follows mounting legal and regulatory pressure on Apple to open up its ecosystem. In particular, a ruling in the Epic Games v. Apple lawsuit and broader antitrust scrutiny have encouraged Apple to ease restrictions on app developers for sharing external payment options — at least in some markets such as the U.S.

With this new update, Spotify users in the U.S. will see clear subscription pricing and can follow links directing them to complete purchases outside of the App Store. This allows Spotify to avoid Apple’s usual commission fees for in-app purchases.

Spotify stated that the new app experience will help provide transparency to users while offering a more competitive pricing structure. The company also continues to advocate for broader reforms to ensure fair treatment for developers across all markets.
