A new domestic policy proposal by Republican lawmakers could lead to a significant disruption in health coverage, putting approximately 11.8 million adults and children at risk of losing their health insurance, according to health policy analysts.
The proposal, which forms part of a broader GOP initiative to overhaul federal welfare programs and reduce government spending, includes measures that would roll back recent healthcare expansions and impose stricter eligibility requirements for programs like Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
Experts warn that such measures could have wide-reaching consequences. Medicaid—a joint federal and state program that covers low-income individuals—has seen increased enrollment following temporary expansions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Returning to more restrictive eligibility criteria and reducing federal support may prompt states to cut back on coverage or enforce time-consuming redeterminations that could lead to many people being dropped from the rolls.
Healthcare advocacy groups argue that the changes would disproportionately affect lower-income families, children, and individuals with chronic health issues. “This policy package threatens to reverse the gains made in healthcare access over the past decade,” said a spokesperson from a national health policy think tank. “Streamlining costs should not come at the expense of people’s basic health needs.”
