The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) will remain closed on Wednesday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day. Juneteenth, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States, has been recognized as a federal holiday since 2021.
President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law on June 17, 2021, establishing June 19 as a federal holiday. The date marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of slavery, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
In recognition of this significant historical event, U.S. stock markets, including the NYSE and Nasdaq, are closed. Government offices, federal institutions, and many banks are also observing the holiday.
The closure of major financial markets reflects the growing national significance of Juneteenth and its role in honoring the struggles and achievements of African Americans. Normal trading on the NYSE is expected to resume on the following business day.
