New Mexico Students Mobilize Against Federal Science Funding Cuts

Students and advocates in New Mexico are stepping up efforts to protect science research funding in response to proposed federal budget cuts. Members of ‘Stand Up for Science,’ an initiative based at the University of New Mexico (UNM), recently hosted an awareness campaign on campus, setting up informational tables and engaging with the academic community to emphasize the importance of sustained investment in scientific research.

The movement comes amid growing concern that reductions in federal funding could significantly hinder research programs at public universities, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Organizers at UNM highlighted how such cuts could negatively impact local innovation, scientific education, and job opportunities for emerging scientists.

“We’re raising awareness and building solidarity among students, faculty, and the broader public to defend science funding at the national level,” said one of the student organizers.
