MSU Denver Students Gain Real-World Investing Experience Through Practical Program

Students at Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver) are taking classroom learning to a new level with a hands-on investing program that allows them to manage real funds. The initiative, designed to simulate the work of professional portfolio managers, provides students from the university’s finance program an opportunity to make real-time investment decisions with actual capital.

The student-managed investment fund began with a modest seed investment and has since grown into a valuable educational resource. Under the supervision of faculty advisors and with guidance from industry professionals, the participating students analyze markets, present stock pitches, and develop investment strategies. The real-world experience helps students build critical financial skills and gain the confidence needed to transition into professional roles after graduation.

According to the university, the program emphasizes both financial literacy and responsible investing. Students are accountable for the performance of their portfolios, and their decisions are subject to review—mirroring the expectations faced by investment professionals.

The initiative is part of MSU Denver’s broader mission to provide experiential learning opportunities that prepare graduates for career success. By engaging directly with the markets and managing actual funds, students walk away not just with academic knowledge, but with practical experience that sets them apart in the job market.

This approach has led many students to secure internships and job offers with local financial firms and investment companies upon graduation. Faculty members cite the program as a model for combining rigorous academic instruction with immersive, real-world applications.

As the program continues to grow, MSU Denver hopes it will serve as a blueprint for other universities seeking to bridge the gap between classroom theory and professional practice.
