Meta CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg announced on Wednesday that the company’s generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) assistant is now being used by over a billion people each month across Meta’s suite of platforms, which includes Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger.
Speaking directly to shareholders in a video posted on his personal Instagram account, Zuckerberg highlighted the rapid adoption and growing influence of Meta’s AI technologies. ‘A billion people are using Meta AI across our apps now, so we made a new standalone Meta AI app for you to check out,’ he said.
The announcement marks a significant milestone in Meta’s aggressive push into AI, underscoring the company’s ambition to become a major player in the increasingly competitive generative AI space. The standalone Meta AI app is designed to make the assistant more accessible and versatile outside the confines of Meta’s existing social media and messaging platforms.
Zuckerberg’s remarks come as major tech companies race to deploy and expand their generative AI capabilities, which include chatbots and content creation tools powered by large language models. By integrating Meta AI deeply into its ecosystem and simultaneously launching it as a dedicated app, Meta is positioning itself to stay competitive alongside rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft.
The Meta AI assistant is capable of facilitating conversations, answering questions, and providing personalized recommendations, among other features. It represents Meta’s broader strategy to reshape user interaction with technology using artificial intelligence, while also collecting critical data that could be used to enhance future AI development.
The unveiling of the standalone app suggests that Meta sees potential in offering a more direct AI interface as users and businesses increasingly explore AI for productivity, entertainment, and customer service purposes.
As generative AI continues to evolve, Meta’s billion-user milestone reflects both high consumer interest and the scale at which the company operates, reaffirming its role as a key architect of the tech-enabled future.
