Google Launches Experimental AI-Powered Search Mode in India

Google has introduced a new AI-powered feature known as ‘AI Mode’ to users in India, marking a significant step toward integrating artificial intelligence directly into its core search services. The feature, currently in an experimental phase, aims to enhance users’ search experience by leveraging generative AI to provide natural, conversational responses to queries.

The AI Mode operates in a question-and-answer format, allowing users to ask detailed or complex questions and receive responses that are more structured and contextual than the traditional list of web links. Google’s move reflects the growing global trend of incorporating generative AI into consumer-facing technologies, similar to the capabilities seen in products like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot-enhanced Bing.

In a statement released with the launch, Google emphasized that the rollout in India is part of a broader initiative to understand how users interact with AI-assisted search in diverse markets. The company categorized the tool as experimental, indicating that it will be continually refined based on user feedback and technological improvements.

While specific details about the underlying technology were not disclosed, the tool is expected to be powered by Google’s proprietary large language models, likely building on its Gemini AI infrastructure.

By debuting this feature in India—a country with a vast and digitally literate population—Google appears to be testing its AI tools in one of the world’s largest internet markets before potentially expanding the feature globally.

Users in India can now begin to interact with the AI Mode, though Google notes that the experience may vary and will evolve over time as part of ongoing research and development efforts.

This launch signifies another major step in Google’s strategy to retain its leadership in the search engine market amidst increasing competition in AI-powered search technologies.
