From starting the car to locating and using charging stations, many renters are left confused and overwhelmed when they pick up an EV without adequate instructions.
Unlike traditional gas-powered vehicles, EVs often require different procedures to start and drive. For instance, most EVs do not need to be turned on in the conventional sense; instead, drivers simply shift into gear and go, provided they have the key fob in the car. This new experience can be disorienting for drivers unfamiliar with electric technology.
Charging an EV also introduces a learning curve. With multiple types of charging connectors and varied networks of charging stations, renters may find it difficult to plan routes or may misjudge the time required to recharge. Inadequate knowledge can lead to what is known as ‘range anxiety,’ where drivers worry about the battery dying before reaching their destination or a charging point.
Experts suggest that rental companies should proactively provide tutorials or brief orientation sessions for EV renters. This could include instructional videos, printed guides, or digital apps that explain vehicle basics such as how to start and stop the car, how to locate and use charging stations, and how to interpret the vehicle’s battery range and energy usage.
Improving customer education not only enhances user experience but also helps support the broader adoption of electric vehicles. As travelers increasingly choose eco-friendly transportation options, rental agencies have a critical role to play in ensuring that the transition to EVs is seamless and stress-free.
As EV adoption continues to rise, the industry must respond with clear communication and support to empower drivers and reduce friction in the rental experience.
