Darkstar Launches €25 Million Fund to Support Defense-Oriented Startups in Europe and Ukraine

Estonia-based venture capital firm Darkstar has launched a new €25 million fund dedicated to supporting startups developing dual-use technologies aimed at military applications. The initiative specifically targets companies creating ‘battle-tested’ products that are suitable for defense deployment in Ukraine and broader European markets.

Led by General Partners Mart Noorma, Ragnar Sass, and Kaspar Gering, Darkstar seeks to bridge the gap between innovative tech startups and the urgent needs of modern militaries, particularly amid increased security concerns in Eastern Europe following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The fund will facilitate investments in startups that have the potential to scale rapidly and adapt their technology for use in both civilian and military contexts.

Darkstar’s approach emphasizes readiness and field applicability, focusing on companies with tech solutions that are functional in real-time operational environments. These may include advancements in drone technology, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and battlefield communication systems.

According to the firm, the idea is not merely to make capital available, but to provide startups with mentorship, testing environments, and direct pathways to defense customers, especially in active conflict zones like Ukraine. The fund intends to work closely with governmental and defense agencies to ensure products meet rigorous standards and address real, frontline needs.

With security and defense becoming increasingly prominent on the European agenda, Darkstar’s fund comes at a pivotal time for innovation in dual-use technologies. The firm’s vision is to help transform traditional perceptions of military procurement and create a more agile, tech-driven defense ecosystem across Europe.

Darkstar’s fundraising efforts and strategic focus underscore the growing role of private capital in supporting military readiness and resilience through technological innovation.
