Fifteen middle school students from the Charlottesville area are spending part of their summer learning about the healthcare profession through the Sentara Health Career Camp, an initiative by Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital designed to provide early exposure to medical careers.

Rather than taking traditional summer vacations, these students are donning scrubs and engaging in hands-on experiences that introduce them to various aspects of hospital and clinical operations. Throughout the camp, participants have opportunities to interact with healthcare professionals across a range of specialties, including nursing, radiology, laboratory work, physical therapy, and pharmacy.

The camp aims to encourage interest in medical and healthcare fields among young students, with a focus on practical exposure and mentorship. Campers take part in interactive workshops and simulations that help demystify complex medical procedures, highlight the importance of patient care, and foster communication and teamwork skills.

Organizers at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital underscore the importance of such programs in cultivating the next generation of healthcare workers. As the healthcare industry continues to face staffing shortages, early career engagement initiatives like this camp play a key role in inspiring future medical professionals.

The Sentara Health Career Camp forms part of a broader effort by the hospital to engage with the community and invest in youth education, particularly in growing sectors like healthcare. Feedback from past participants indicates that the program helps clarify career goals and instills a sense of purpose for students considering medical professions.

As the camp concludes, participants will leave with a better understanding of healthcare careers, potentially shaping their academic paths in high school and beyond.
