Brex Reimagines Software Procurement to Embrace the AI Era

As artificial intelligence (AI) tools continue to reshape industries, companies across sectors are rethinking traditional workflows. Fintech firm Brex is no exception. The company, which provides corporate cards and expense management tools for businesses, has overhauled its software procurement process in response to the rise of AI technology.

Brex initially tried to vet AI-powered tools through its conventional software procurement framework. However, executives quickly found that this process—often lengthy and heavily compliance-based—simply couldn’t keep up with the pace at which new AI innovations are being developed and adopted.

According to company representatives, Brex encountered mounting challenges as it sought to evaluate and deploy cutting-edge AI solutions. The traditional procurement pipeline, built for software with well-established enterprise use cases and vendor histories, proved too sluggish and inflexible for the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

In response, Brex designed a new approach to software procurement—one that’s deliberately lightweight, agile, and tailored for experimental technologies like generative AI. The company now focuses on rapid, small-scale testing of potential AI tools, allowing teams to quickly validate usefulness and security before committing to full-scale implementation.

This shift involves iterative pilot testing, tight collaboration between security, legal, and IT departments, and a streamlined assessment of data privacy and AI model behavior. By adopting this new procurement mindset, Brex aims to stay competitive in an environment where companies must move fast to leverage the benefits of AI.

The move by Brex reflects a broader trend among innovative companies seeking ways to embrace AI without sacrificing governance or exposing themselves to risk. As AI continues to evolve, more organizations may find it necessary to rethink traditional enterprise processes in favor of more flexible and experimental approaches.
