AI Can Aid Hospital Finances, But Success Requires Operational Overhaul, Expert Says

As hospitals nationwide face intensifying financial pressures and declining revenues, many are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) as a potential solution. However, healthcare leaders are being warned that simply investing in new technologies is not enough. According to Prashant Karamchandani of healthcare consulting firm Chartis, the true value of AI will only be realized when paired with foundational organizational changes.

Karamchandani emphasizes that health systems need to go beyond procuring AI tools and focus on essential internal reforms. This includes robust change management, continuous process improvement, and a thoughtful redesign of operating models. Without these supportive structures, AI initiatives are unlikely to yield sustainable benefits.

“AI can be a powerful enabler,” said Karamchandani, “but it cannot replace the need for sound strategy and operational discipline.” He suggests that healthcare organizations assess their readiness for digital transformation by examining their management practices, employee engagement, and willingness to embrace change.

Hospitals are increasingly exploring AI for applications in medical billing, patient scheduling, revenue cycle management, and clinical documentation. These use cases promise to streamline operations and reduce labor costs. Still, experts warn that inadequate preparation or a lack of strategic integration can lead to underwhelming outcomes and wasted investments.

The call for a more comprehensive approach comes at a critical time for the healthcare industry. A combination of labor shortages, inflation, and reimbursement challenges has left many systems operating on razor-thin margins. In this environment, leveraging advanced technology may provide a competitive edge—but only if accompanied by systemic transformation.

Ultimately, experts like Karamchandani advocate for a balanced approach that blends technological innovation with operational excellence. Only then, they argue, can hospitals fully unlock the potential of AI to improve both financial performance and patient care.
