White House Proposes Deep Cuts to NSF, Targeting Climate and Social Sciences

The White House has unveiled a proposal to dramatically reduce funding for the National Science Foundation (NSF), cutting the agency’s budget by more than half. The initiative targets the elimination of NSF research related to climate change, clean energy, and what the administration described as “woke social, behavioral and economic sciences.”

According to officials, the proposal reflects a reprioritization of federal funding away from initiatives the administration considers unnecessary, including support for research fields viewed as politically or ideologically driven. If enacted, the plan would significantly alter the NSF’s mission, which traditionally funds a wide range of scientific disciplines, from fundamental physics to social science and environmental studies.

Critics, including scientific organizations and environmental groups, argue that the proposed cuts would hamper vital research needed to combat climate change and advance clean energy technologies. Additionally, experts warn that reducing support for social sciences could negatively affect policymaking and societal understanding on issues such as mental health, education, and economic inequality.

The proposal is expected to encounter significant opposition in Congress, where bipartisan support for scientific research has traditionally protected NSF funding from deep reductions. Lawmakers are likely to scrutinize the details in upcoming budget negotiations and hearings.
