The US stock market will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day. This federal holiday commemorates the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in the United States and has been recognized as a national holiday since 2021.
As per the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq trading schedule, the markets will observe a full-day closure on Juneteenth, which falls on Wednesday this year. This means that there will be no regular trading on major US exchanges. Similarly, the bond markets, as guided by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), will also be closed.
Juneteenth has joined a list of other recognized market holidays such as New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. While the stock and bond markets traditionally close on weekends, these federal holidays result in additional days off from trading activity throughout the year.
Normal trading operations will resume on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
Investors are advised to plan their transactions accordingly and remain aware of other upcoming market holidays that might affect their trading schedules.
