The University of Kentucky (UK) Physician Assistant Studies Department has reaffirmed and expanded its strategic partnership with UK St. Claire HealthCare to combat the persistent shortage of health care professionals in rural Kentucky communities. This strengthened collaboration is supported by funding from the Healthcare Workforce Investment Fund Partnership Proposal, awarded by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education.
This initiative is particularly significant in addressing the disparities in access to health care services in underserved and geographically isolated areas of the state. Through this partnership, UK aims to train and retain skilled physician assistants and other healthcare providers who are equipped to meet the needs of rural populations.
The awarded funds will be used to enhance clinical training opportunities, provide infrastructure support, and deliver quality education that emphasizes rural health competencies. By leveraging the resources and networks of both UK’s academic environment and St. Claire HealthCare’s clinical expertise, the joint effort seeks to build a sustainable pipeline of healthcare professionals dedicated to serving these critical areas.
University officials and healthcare administrators see this as a step forward in long-term rural health workforce development, aligning with statewide goals to improve health equity and access in Kentucky. As the program continues to evolve, both institutions remain committed to fostering student success, advancing community health outcomes, and addressing the systemic workforce shortages affecting vulnerable populations.
