A top advisor to the U.S. government on artificial intelligence has issued a cautionary statement regarding China’s rising capabilities in AI, suggesting that the global technological race is intensifying. The concerns come amid increasing competition between the United States and China in a sector that is widely seen as critical to economic competitiveness, national security, and geopolitical influence.
The advisor, whose identity was not disclosed in the report, highlighted that China is rapidly investing resources into AI development, particularly in the areas of machine learning, quantum computing, and large-scale facial recognition deployments. Already, several bipartisan initiatives have been proposed in Congress to boost AI funding and establish more rigorous technology export controls to prevent sensitive innovations from being transferred to strategic competitors.
This warning echoes sentiments previously shared by members of the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence (NSCAI), which has consistently highlighted the strategic importance of AI in preserving the United States’ global leadership. The panel has called for a national AI strategy that spans education, scientific innovation, and public-private partnership.
The U.S. administration is currently reviewing its AI policies with input from experts in academia, defense, and industry to better align national efforts and respond more efficiently to technological advances by nations like China.
