In a significant step toward enhancing cross-border healthcare accessibility, the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and Zhuhai People’s Hospital have been included in a pilot scheme designed to expand medical coverage for Hong Kong residents in mainland China.
The addition of the two hospitals, both located in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, allows eligible Hong Kong residents to seek selected medical services across the border under the pilot programme. The initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate Greater Bay Area medical resources and improve access to healthcare services for residents who live and travel between the regions.
Officials say the inclusion of these hospitals aims to alleviate pressure on Hong Kong’s healthcare system by providing convenient alternatives for treatment in the nearby city of Zhuhai. Patients participating in the scheme will benefit from extended coverage that includes a range of outpatient and inpatient services, with costs being partially or fully reimbursed under Hong Kong’s established health insurance programmes.
The move is seen as a milestone in deepening cooperation between Hong Kong and mainland Chinese medical institutions, and it reflects the growing importance of regional collaboration in public health management.
Authorities will monitor the progression of the pilot programme and evaluate its effectiveness with a view to potentially expanding the initiative to include more hospitals and a wider variety of services in the future.
