Trump Signs Executive Order to End Federal Funding for NPR and PBS

President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order directing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) to terminate federal funding for National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). The move comes amid escalating tensions between the Trump administration and the two public broadcasters, which have faced repeated criticism from the president during his second term.

The executive order mandates the CPB’s board to initiate the process of ending government financial support for both NPR and PBS, which rely partly on federal appropriations to deliver educational and cultural programming to audiences across the United States.

This action is consistent with prior budget proposals made during the Trump administration, which have called for reductions or eliminations of federal funding for public media. Supporters of the measure argue that public broadcasters should operate independently of government aid, while opponents contend the move could undermine access to non-commercial content, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

Neither NPR nor PBS commented immediately on the executive order. The CPB, which serves as a buffer between broadcasters and the federal government, has not yet outlined a timetable for implementing the directive.

The decision is expected to spark debate in Congress and among media advocacy organizations concerned about the future of independent public media in the United States.
