Trump Signs Executive Order to End Federal Funding for NPR and PBS

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday instructing the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s board to terminate federal funding for National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). The move affects the two largest public media broadcasters in the United States, both of which have come under repeated criticism from the president during his second term.

The executive action marks a significant shift in federal support for public media, which has traditionally received government funding to provide educational and non-commercial programming to the American public. Trump’s directive seeks to remove this support, which could have implications for public broadcasting services, particularly in rural and underserved areas where such programming is often a vital source of information.

Critics of the decision argue that ending federal funding threatens the accessibility and independence of public media, while supporters claim it reflects a need to limit government spending and reduce perceived bias in public broadcasting. The order is expected to face legal and political challenges as it moves toward implementation.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private nonprofit that distributes federal funds to NPR and PBS member stations, has not yet released a formal response to the executive order.
