The majority of the 200 artificial intelligence (AI) experts hired during President Joe Biden’s administration were dismissed under former President Donald Trump, according to a recent report by Time. These experts were brought on board to enhance the federal government’s AI capabilities in areas such as research, regulation, and ethical guidelines.
The Biden administration had aimed to position the United States as a global leader in AI development through strategic investments and the recruitment of top-tier talent. Many of the hires were placed in key agencies including the Department of Defense, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and other federal entities crucial for technological advancement.
However, Time reports that the previous Trump administration did not prioritize these AI initiatives and reduced the size of the team significantly, negatively impacting ongoing projects and limiting government capacity to oversee and guide the fast-evolving AI sector.
The dismissals have sparked concern among industry leaders and policymakers who argue that a strong, stable federal AI workforce is essential for national competitiveness, security, and the ethical development of emerging technologies. The Biden administration is now reportedly working to restore and expand the AI talent pool within the government.
Experts warn that continuing turnover and lack of continuity in federal AI strategy could compromise the country’s ability to respond to global challenges and harness AI for the public good.
