Startup Polar Simplifies Global SaaS Sales for Developers With Streamlined Billing and Tax Compliance

Polar, a new startup founded by Birk Jernström—formerly co-founder of the e-commerce platform Tictail—is aiming to revolutionize the way developers sell digital products and software-as-a-service (SaaS) subscriptions globally. By positioning itself as the Merchant of Record (MoR) for developers, Polar assumes the responsibility for key operational areas such as billing, tax compliance, and revenue collection.

In the digital economy, developers face significant hurdles when attempting to sell their products across different jurisdictions. These challenges include varying tax laws, evolving consumer protection regulations, and complex billing systems. Polar addresses these pain points by offering a platform that allows developers to start selling worldwide from day one, without needing to navigate the intricate web of international commerce regulations.

The core of Polar’s value proposition lies in its MoR model, which means the company takes ownership of the sales transactions. This includes charging customers, collecting payments, handling VAT and sales tax registration, and ensuring regulatory compliance on behalf of the developer. As a result, developers can concentrate on building and improving their products rather than spending time on administrative overhead.

Founded by Jernström, who has a strong background in e-commerce technology through his work at Tictail (acquired by Shopify in 2018), Polar combines a deep understanding of the digital sales ecosystem with a developer-first approach. The company’s mission centers on enabling independent software creators and small teams to participate fully in the global market without being constrained by red tape.

Early adopters have welcomed the model, particularly for its simplicity and transparency. By abstracting complex legal and financial frameworks, Polar eliminates a major barrier to entry for SaaS developers—particularly those who operate independently or within small organizations.

As the demand for digital products and SaaS tools continues to grow, platforms like Polar could play a pivotal role in democratizing access to global markets. With its emphasis on risk management, automation, and compliance, Polar may well set a new standard for how digital goods are sold internationally.

Polar’s launch reflects a broader trend in tech toward reducing friction in global commerce, especially in the wake of increasingly stringent regulatory environments. By acting as both gatekeeper and enabler, Polar offers a compelling solution for the digital age, bringing scalability and peace of mind to a new generation of global entrepreneurs.
