Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, announced on Wednesday the launch of standalone versions of its Lens Studio platform on iOS and as a web-based tool. With this move, the company is expanding access to its augmented reality (AR) creation tools beyond the traditional desktop application, aiming to empower a broader audience of creators.
Lens Studio is Snap’s official tool for building AR experiences known as Lenses, which are widely used within the Snapchat app. With the introduction of dedicated iOS and web apps, Snap is positioning AR development as more mobile-friendly and inclusive to those who may not have high-powered desktops or prior coding experience.
The iOS app allows users to build AR experiences directly from their mobile devices, making it more convenient to create filters and share them instantly. Meanwhile, the new web-based version provides users with the ability to design lenses from virtually any browser, without needing to download specialized software.
Snap’s move reflects a growing trend in the tech industry to democratize access to AR tools and enable a wider variety of content creators. By simplifying the development process and supporting more platforms, Snap aims to foster a larger and more diverse creator ecosystem.
This update is also a strategic step for Snap as it continues to compete in the growing AR market, which is being rapidly developed by tech giants like Meta and Apple. The company has previously highlighted the role of AR in driving user engagement and advertising opportunities within its platform.
Snap did not immediately provide detailed feature comparisons between the new mobile/web versions and the desktop version. However, making Lens Studio available across multiple platforms could lead to greater innovation and increased usage of its AR features both on and off Snapchat.
The Lens Studio iOS app is now available on the App Store, and the web tool can be accessed through Snap’s official Lens Studio portal.
