In a landmark move for public healthcare leadership in Broward County, Shane Strum has been named interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Memorial Healthcare System while simultaneously continuing his role as CEO of Broward Health. This dual appointment places Strum at the helm of both of the county’s public health systems, a first for the region.

Strum, a veteran healthcare executive and former chief of staff to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, took over leadership of Broward Health in 2021. His extensive experience in both public administration and hospital management has made him a notable figure in Florida’s healthcare landscape.

Memorial Healthcare System, which operates several hospitals including Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, is among the largest public healthcare systems in the state. Broward Health, likewise, serves a vast and diverse population through facilities such as Broward Health Medical Center and Broward Health North.

Healthcare officials noted that Strum’s dual leadership is intended to foster greater collaboration and efficiency across the public health infrastructure in Broward County. The move comes amid a broader push to streamline healthcare delivery, manage costs, and improve patient outcomes in the post-pandemic era.

Neither organization has announced whether Strum will eventually assume a permanent role as head of Memorial Healthcare System, and details regarding a long-term leadership strategy remain forthcoming.

Stakeholders in both systems are expected to monitor the shared leadership model closely to assess its impact on care coordination, financial performance, and employee engagement. The appointment highlights an evolving approach to managing complex healthcare networks, with increased emphasis on centralized decision-making and strategic alignment.

Further announcements are anticipated as both systems evaluate the effectiveness of this unprecedented management structure.
