The Rhode Island House of Representatives passed a $14.3 billion state budget on Tuesday for the fiscal year starting July 1, concluding the process in a relatively quick three-hour debate. The budget was approved with a 66-to-9 vote, largely along party lines.
The budget outlines spending priorities for the coming year while taking into account possible disruptions from federal budget cuts being debated in Washington, D.C. Lawmakers emphasized the need for caution as Congressional negotiations on Republican-led spending reductions continue to unfold, potentially affecting federal aid to Rhode Island.
House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi and finance leaders described the budget as a balanced and forward-looking plan that preserves essential services, funds education, and supports economic development while maintaining fiscal responsibility. The plan includes funding for key priorities such as behavioral health services, housing initiatives, and measures to address climate change.
Among those voicing support for the bill was State Rep. Marie Hopkins (R-Warwick), a nurse, who highlighted parts of the budget that support Rhode Island’s healthcare infrastructure. Despite party divisions, several lawmakers expressed bipartisan concern about the uncertainties stemming from Washington’s financial decisions.
The budget now moves to the Rhode Island Senate for consideration. If approved, it will take effect on July 1, starting the new fiscal year with a mix of investments and financial caution reflecting both state and national economic pressures.
