In a concerted effort to address ongoing healthcare workforce shortages, the Shapiro Administration has announced the official implementation of the Physical Therapy Compact in Pennsylvania. This initiative enables licensed physical therapists and physical therapist assistants from participating states to practice in Pennsylvania without the need for additional licenses, and vice versa.
The Physical Therapy Compact is an interstate agreement designed to reduce regulatory barriers and increase access to care. By joining the compact, Pennsylvania aims to enhance the mobility of qualified professionals and improve healthcare service delivery, especially in underserved and rural areas. The move is expected to help healthcare providers respond more effectively to rising demands for rehabilitation services and physical therapy treatment.
“This implementation is a significant milestone in ensuring Pennsylvanians have better access to critical healthcare services,” said a representative from the Governor’s Office. “Streamlining professional licensure allows experienced practitioners to work where they are needed most, without unnecessary delays.”
Pennsylvania now joins a growing number of states that have adopted the compact, which not only expands job opportunities for licensed professionals but also supports quicker deployment of resources during times of crisis or increased demand.
The Physical Therapy Compact Commission, which oversees the implementation and governance of the compact, sets the standards for eligibility and compliance among member states. Participating therapists must meet specific criteria, including being free of disciplinary action, to obtain a compact privilege.
Healthcare providers, patient advocacy groups, and industry stakeholders have widely praised the step, noting that it will remove administrative hurdles while maintaining public safety and professional accountability.
With this formal adoption, Pennsylvania reaffirms its commitment to modernizing healthcare delivery and investing in long-term solutions to workforce challenges across the state.
