Online Scammers Pose as Celebrities to Defraud Victims on Telegram

Authorities are warning the public about a growing internet scam in which con artists impersonate celebrities to deceive individuals and extract money through private messaging apps like Telegram.

According to recent reports, victims are initially contacted on mainstream social media platforms by fraudsters claiming to be high-profile public figures. Once a conversation is initiated, the scammers attempt to build trust and emotional rapport, often portraying fictional romantic or personal relationships. The conversation is then moved to Telegram, a messaging service known for its privacy features, where the fraudulent scheme intensifies.

Here, scammers exploit their victims by asking for money under various pretenses, such as personal emergencies, investment opportunities, or exclusive meet-and-greet offers. In some cases, criminals have used deepfake technology or artificial intelligence tools to make their impersonations even more convincing.

Law enforcement and cybersecurity experts urge users to remain vigilant online, especially when approached by individuals claiming to be celebrities or public figures. The FBI has previously issued statements highlighting the dangers of romance scams and identity theft, emphasizing that authentic celebrities do not typically reach out to fans on personal matters through private messages.

To protect against such fraud:
– Verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a public figure.
– Avoid sending money or personal details to people met online.
– Report suspicious accounts to the social media platform.
– Contact authorities if you believe you may have been a victim.

The rise in such scams highlights the need for ongoing public education and platform accountability to ensure a safer online environment.
