Olympic Athletes Share Views on Transgender Participation in First-of-Its-Kind Survey

In a pioneering effort to better understand the perspectives of elite athletes on transgender participation in sports, researchers have conducted the first-ever survey focused directly on the opinions of Olympic-level competitors. The study aims to shed light on a contentious issue that has drawn global debate across the sports community, policymaking circles, and the general public.

The survey, which gathered responses from a diverse group of athletes who have competed at the highest levels of international sport, explored attitudes concerning the participation of transgender women in female sports categories. Unlike previous discussions dominated by commentators, governing bodies, and advocacy groups, this research allowed elite athletes themselves to weigh in on the matter.

Findings indicated a broad spectrum of viewpoints, ranging from strong advocacy for inclusive policies to concerns about perceived fairness and potential physical advantages. Athletes expressed a desire for greater clarity in regulations and more scientific research to guide decisions around eligibility and competition.

Several participants emphasized the need to maintain fair play while also fostering inclusivity and respect for all athletes. Some expressed concerns about physiological advantages that could exist when transgender women—assigned male at birth—compete in female categories, particularly in sports where physical attributes significantly influence performance outcomes.

Conversely, other athletes highlighted the importance of sports as a platform for diversity and equality, underscoring the necessity of policy decisions that do not marginalize transgender individuals or deny them access to competition.

This survey adds a critical dimension to the ongoing debate, providing direct insight from those most affected by these policies—elite athletes themselves. Researchers hope the results will inform future decisions by sporting bodies and help create guidelines that balance fairness, inclusion, and scientific understanding in sport.
