Marites Buenafe, a 62-year-old employee of University of Kentucky Healthcare, was confirmed dead following a missing persons report filed on July 1. The Alaska Army National Guard located her body as part of a coordinated search effort.

Details surrounding the circumstances of her disappearance and death have not yet been formally released by authorities. Her family and colleagues had reported her missing earlier this month, prompting search operations and public appeals for information.

Buenafe had travelled to Alaska, though it remains unclear whether she was there for personal or professional reasons. After losing contact with her, local authorities were alerted, and the search began involving multiple state and military agencies. The Alaska Army National Guard ultimately discovered her remains, though information about the specific location or conditions has not been disclosed.

The University of Kentucky issued a statement mourning the loss of Buenafe, praising her years of dedicated service and extending condolences to her family.

Law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigation and have indicated that more information will be shared as it becomes available. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Buenafe’s death marks a tragic end to a wide-reaching search effort and leaves her community mourning the loss of a respected colleague and friend.
