Meta to Automate Privacy and Risk Reviews Using AI for App Updates

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is developing an artificial intelligence system designed to evaluate up to 90% of privacy and policy risk assessments tied to product updates across its suite of applications. The move marks a significant shift in how the tech giant manages internal compliance at scale and reflects increasing reliance on AI to manage complex regulatory and governance tasks.

The AI system aims to replicate the decision-making process used by Meta’s internal policy teams when assessing potential harms and leveraging privacy frameworks during software update deployments. Currently, every proposed feature or update must undergo a privacy and safety analysis—a labor-intensive process traditionally requiring human expertise. By integrating AI, Meta expects to accelerate this review process, particularly for routine and lower-risk changes.

This automated approach will allow human reviewers to focus on higher-risk or novel updates that demand deeper scrutiny. According to Meta, the AI system is being trained on millions of past decisions made by compliance and privacy experts, with the company emphasizing ongoing human oversight to ensure accuracy and accountability.

The initiative comes amid heightened attention from regulators around the globe, especially in the European Union, which enforces stringent requirements under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the recently enacted Digital Services Act. Streamlining compliance may also help Meta preempt or respond more quickly to new legislative pressures.

Critics have raised concerns about potential over-reliance on automated systems in making ethically complex decisions. Meta has addressed these concerns by stating that AI will not fully replace human judgment but serve as an assistive technology for internal teams.

As of now, the AI-powered system is still under development, with Meta conducting safety and effectiveness trials. A wider rollout is expected in the coming months. If successful, the model could represent a new industry standard for how large-scale technology platforms manage privacy and policy compliance through automation.
