Massachusetts Man Wins $2 Million After Accidental Powerball Ticket Purchase

A fortunate mistake turned into a multimillion-dollar win for Paul Corcoran, a resident of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, who claimed a $2 million Powerball prize after unintentionally purchasing an additional ticket for a recent drawing.

Corcoran, who regularly plays the Powerball, made an error during a routine purchase, inadvertently buying two identical tickets with the same numbers rather than one. The extra ticket — initially considered a mistake — became a life-changing decision when the numbers matched for a $1 million prize. Because he held two winning tickets with the same numbers, he collected two $1 million prizes, totaling $2 million.

Lottery officials confirmed Corcoran’s win and stated that mistakes like his, while uncommon, occasionally result in double payouts when players accidentally duplicate tickets.

Corcoran has not publicly announced specific plans for how he intends to use the money, but he expressed gratitude for the unexpected fortune. His story serves as a reminder to lottery players that even blunders can sometimes lead to positive outcomes.

Powerball drawings take place three times a week, and jackpots can climb into the hundreds of millions, drawing millions of players nationwide. The lottery encourages all participants to play responsibly and to double-check their tickets to avoid errors — though in Corcoran’s case, the mistake turned out to be a stroke of luck.
