‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Live-Action Film Soars to $85 Million Opening Weekend

Universal Pictures’ live-action adaptation of the beloved animated franchise ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ debuted to an impressive $85 million in its opening weekend. The film, reimagining the original story for a new audience, launched in theaters nationwide and marks a significant launch for both the studio and the future of live-action remakes.

The film, directed by Dean DeBlois—who also helmed the animated trilogy—follows the journey of a young Viking named Hiccup and his unlikely bond with a dragon named Toothless. Staying largely faithful to the source material, this adaptation introduces a new cast and visual interpretation while preserving the heart of the original series that captivated audiences over a decade ago.

Industry analysts note that this strong debut signals heightened audience interest in family-friendly, nostalgia-driven content. The $85 million domestic opening places the film among the top performers for early summer releases and provides momentum for potential sequels and related merchandise lines.

The original animated trilogy, produced by DreamWorks Animation, was both a commercial and critical success, earning multiple Academy Award nominations and grossing over $1.6 billion globally. The live-action version aims to replicate that success, tapping into both existing fans and a new generation of moviegoers.

With this robust opening, ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ is well positioned to become one of this summer’s breakout hits, bolstering Universal’s lineup and demonstrating the lasting appeal of the franchise.
