GSA: Only One Chipset Fully Complies with 3GPP Rel-18 Standards

The Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) has reported that only one chipset currently available is fully compatible with the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Release 18 specifications in both hardware and software aspects.

Release 18, often referred to as the first milestone of ‘5G-Advanced,’ brings new features and enhancements aimed at improving performance, efficiency, and supporting emerging use cases across sectors. Achieving full compliance with this standard requires both updated hardware capabilities and software implementations, making the transition significant for component manufacturers.

The GSA did not specify which chipset currently fulfills these stringent criteria. However, the revelation underscores the early stages of the 5G-Advanced ecosystem and highlights the technical challenges involved in aligning both software and silicon with the latest standards.

This development could impact the pace of deployment for networks and devices aiming to leverage the full benefits of 5G-Advanced, including enhanced mobile broadband, lower latency, power efficiency, and support for expanded frequency bands.

As vendors continue to evolve their chipsets and products to align with Rel-18, the GSA is expected to track adoption and standard compliance trends throughout 2024 and beyond, providing critical insight into the maturity of next-generation 5G technologies.
