Google to Launch Gemini Chatbot for Children With Parental Safeguards

Google will begin offering its Gemini chatbot to children as early as next week, the company announced in a recent communication to families. The technology giant has taken steps to notify parents about the upcoming change, emphasizing that safety and privacy remain top priorities.

The move signals Google’s broader intention to expand access to its generative AI tools among younger users while implementing stringent safeguards. Gemini, which is built on Google’s advanced large language models, will feature parental controls and usage monitoring capabilities when accessed by children with supervised Google accounts.

According to the company’s email, the chatbot will be available for use by children under the age of 18 through accounts managed under Google’s Family Link system. This system gives parents and guardians oversight into their children’s digital activity, with the ability to limit usage and manage access to specific features.

In addition, Google will implement restrictions to prevent the chatbot from generating inappropriate or harmful content and will continue refining the system based on user feedback and expert consultation in child development and digital safety.

The launch of Gemini for kids aligns with ongoing industry efforts to adapt artificial intelligence tools for younger audiences in a responsible and secure manner. Google stated that the initial rollout would be closely monitored and updated regularly to adhere to best practices in child safety online.
