Google revealed on Tuesday that it is broadening the availability of digital IDs in its Google Wallet app to more states, along with adding support for additional services that accept these IDs. This initiative is part of Google’s continued efforts to streamline identity verification using mobile devices.
Currently, digital IDs in Google Wallet allow users to store official government-issued identification—like driver’s licenses—on their Android smartphones. These digital IDs can be used for tasks such as verifying age or identity for airport security and other transactions that require validation.
With this expansion, more users in different parts of the United States will be able to add their digital driver’s licenses and state IDs to Google Wallet, potentially replacing the need to carry a physical ID for some scenarios. The company also announced new features to make the digital ID experience more useful, such as increased compatibility with state and federal agencies as well as private sector uses.
Google’s move aligns with industry-wide efforts to provide secure, convenient digital identity management on mobile platforms. The company said it is prioritizing user privacy and security, with ID information stored locally on the device and shared only with user consent.
Further details on which states are included in the rollout and when the new services will become available are expected soon.
