Figma’s Annual Report Highlights Challenges and Changes in Generative AI for Designers and Developers

Figma has released its 2025 ‘State of Generative AI’ annual report, shedding light on the shifting dynamics between artificial intelligence and the communities of design and development. The findings reveal a nuanced picture: while enthusiasm for AI tools among professionals is high, the integration process is proving to be far from seamless.

According to Figma, the report highlights the growing adoption of generative AI in everyday workflows, especially within design and code-based applications. Designers are increasingly leveraging AI features for tasks such as ideation, layout generation, and UI iteration, while developers are experimenting with code suggestions and automating repetitive coding tasks.

However, the report makes clear that this transformation is not without friction. Design and development professionals report concerns about AI-generated content quality, potential data privacy issues, and the ethical implications of relying on machine-generated outputs. Many also note that while AI can accelerate certain processes, it cannot yet replace the creative input and critical thinking of skilled professionals.

The report also spotlights organizational challenges, including a skills gap in understanding and applying AI tools effectively. Companies are grappling with educating teams, ensuring responsible AI use, and integrating these tools into established workflows without disrupting productivity.

Despite these challenges, the report indicates cautious optimism. Figma notes that a growing number of teams are developing strategies to incorporate AI responsibly and view it as a complement to human creativity rather than a replacement. Thoughtful implementation, upskilling, and clearer policy guidance are listed as key factors in successful adoption.

Figma’s 2025 report thus serves as both a reflection of current struggles and a roadmap for future progress in generative AI within the design and software development sectors.
