Although bison might appear calm and approachable, wildlife experts are reminding the public that these animals are still untamed and potentially dangerous. Despite their resemblance to friendly cattle or even grizzly bears in stature, bison should never be treated like domesticated animals.
Bison are the largest land mammals in North America and can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. They are known to charge unexpectedly if they feel threatened. According to park officials and animal behaviorists, visitors to areas where bison roam freely—such as U.S. national parks—must maintain a safe distance, typically at least 25 yards away.
Encounters between tourists and bison have occasionally resulted in injuries when individuals attempt to approach or feed the animals. Wildlife management agencies continue to educate the public through signage, informational campaigns, and guided tours in an effort to reduce such incidents.
The message from experts is clear: admire the majesty of bison from a safe distance, and always remember they are wild, instinct-driven creatures. Respecting their space not only protects people but also the animals themselves from harmful interactions.
