DeepMind Employees in London Move to Unionize with Communication Workers Union

Approximately 300 London-based employees of DeepMind, Google’s artificial intelligence subsidiary, are taking steps to unionize. The employees are collaborating with the Communication Workers Union (CWU) to push for formal recognition.

The unionization effort reflects growing concerns among tech workers about workplace conditions, job security, and the ethical implications of AI development. While unionization remains relatively rare in the tech industry, this initiative is part of a broader trend of labor organization within major technology firms.

DeepMind, known for its advancements in AI research and applications, has not yet publicly commented on the effort. The CWU, one of the UK’s largest trade unions, has previously been involved in efforts to organize workers in technology and communications sectors.

If successful, the move could set a significant precedent for unionization efforts within highly specialized and historically non-unionized sectors of the tech industry.
