Cambridge, 28 April 2025 – The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has officially launched the PRESCIENT programme, an ambitious new £8.4 million initiative designed to advance predictions of future climate and environmental change. The project commenced with a two-day kick-off meeting held in Cambridge this week.
Funded by the UK government, the PRESCIENT programme will focus on improving the understanding of complex interactions between the atmosphere, oceans, ice sheets, and ecosystems in Antarctica. Researchers aim to develop innovative models and technologies to enhance the accuracy of climate forecasts, particularly concerning the stability of the Antarctic ice sheet and global sea-level rise.
The programme brings together a consortium of leading scientists, engineers, and technologists from multiple institutions, reinforcing the UK’s position at the forefront of climate research.
