At its 2025 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple unveiled a groundbreaking new artificial intelligence platform titled ‘Apple Intelligence’, which is designed to deeply embed generative AI functionality into its operating systems — starting with applications like Shortcuts and Notes. This move marks Apple’s strategic entry into the burgeoning field of AI-powered productivity and automation tools.
According to Apple, users will now be able to access AI models either directly on their device or through Apple’s secure Private Compute infrastructure. This offers a dual-layered approach to AI processing, combining real-time responsiveness with strong privacy protections. The AI functions can support users in generating content, completing tasks, and enhancing automation directly from within the Shortcuts and Notes apps.
For example, a user creating a workflow in Shortcuts can instruct Apple Intelligence to generate a custom message, schedule an event, or summarize a data set based on information stored in the device or accessed securely via the cloud. The AI delivers the output seamlessly into the workflow, boosting the automation capabilities for both casual and power users.
Similarly, in the Notes app, Apple Intelligence supports smarter note-taking. Users can ask the AI to summarize long blocks of text, prioritize tasks, or generate structured outlines, allowing for faster and more organized information management.
Emphasizing privacy, Apple stated that on-device processing keeps personal data secure by ensuring that sensitive inputs are never transmitted to external servers unless explicitly required. When cloud processing is used, Apple’s Private Compute architecture ensures that AI model operations are linked to anonymized user identifiers, with none of the data stored permanently or shared.
Apple’s approach is a direct response to the growing demand for privacy-conscious AI tools, setting it apart from tech competitors who mainly rely on cloud-based models. The incorporation of AI into native applications like Shortcuts and Notes illustrates Apple’s commitment to enhancing user productivity while adhering to its long-standing privacy principles.
