Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of Amazon, announced on Thursday the official launch of its new Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region. This strategic expansion into Taiwan is part of AWS’s broader effort to strengthen global infrastructure and meet the growing demand for cloud services across the Asia-Pacific region.
In conjunction with the launch, AWS revealed plans to invest more than $5 billion over the next several years to build, connect, operate, and maintain data center facilities in Taiwan. The company stated that the investment is aimed at supporting government agencies, startups, enterprises, and academic institutions in Taiwan as they accelerate digital transformation.
The new AWS region in Taipei will consist of three Availability Zones, each equipped with independent infrastructure to enhance reliability and fault tolerance for mission-critical applications. Customers in Taiwan and surrounding areas will now be able to run workloads and store data within Taiwan more efficiently, with lower latency and increased data residency options.
AWS emphasizes that the new region will help foster innovation across various industries, including financial services, healthcare, and manufacturing, by providing access to advanced technologies such as machine learning, analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT) services.
“AWS’s investment in Taiwan will help our local customers realize the benefits of cloud computing while creating new job opportunities and promoting economic growth,” the company said in a statement.
This development underscores the continued expansion of cloud infrastructure providers in Asia, as demand for advanced computing resources continues to surge globally. Taiwan’s strategic location, robust IT talent pool, and stable infrastructure were cited as key advantages for the AWS expansion.
With the launch of the Asia Pacific (Taipei) Region, AWS now operates 33 geographic regions and 105 Availability Zones worldwide.
