In a demonstration of solidarity and concern, members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) union assembled at Fairview Range Medical Center to advocate for the preservation and improvement of rural healthcare services.

Union members emphasized the critical need to maintain access to high-quality medical care for residents in rural areas, where healthcare facilities have increasingly faced challenges such as staff shortages, reduced services, and the threat of closures. The rally, held outside the Hibbing hospital, was designed to bring public attention to the importance of protecting healthcare infrastructure that serves remote communities.

Speakers at the event included healthcare workers, union representatives, and community leaders. Many relayed firsthand accounts of how their communities have been affected by diminishing healthcare options. The participants underscored the essential role of hospitals like Fairview Range in providing emergency care, chronic disease management, and preventative services to populations that often lack alternative resources.

The AFSCME union, which represents a broad range of public service employees including healthcare workers, called on both state officials and healthcare providers to invest more resources into rural health systems. They argued that ensuring sufficient funding, staffing, and support for these facilities is vital to mitigating the disparity in healthcare access between urban and rural areas.

The rally is part of a broader initiative by the union to spotlight and confront the unique challenges facing rural healthcare providers and the communities they serve. Organizers expressed hope that their efforts will lead to policy discussions and concrete actions that protect and enhance healthcare delivery in underserved areas across the state.
