Concerns Rise Over AI’s Impact on Student Learning

Artificial intelligence has steadily transformed many facets of modern life, including the education sector. While AI offers numerous benefits—such as personalized learning experiences and efficient administrative support—its growing incorporation in academic environments is also drawing criticism from students.

MeKhia Ellerbe, a sophomore finance student, voiced concerns that AI may be diminishing the learning process. She believes that, rather than enhancing education, AI is making it easier for students to bypass critical thinking and comprehension skills. Her perspective reflects a broader debate about whether AI tools might be doing more harm than good when used inappropriately.

Critics argue that overreliance on AI technologies for tasks such as writing, research, and problem solving can hinder intellectual growth and devalue the educational journey. Proponents, however, emphasize the importance of teaching students how to responsibly and ethically use AI as a supplement—not a replacement—for learning.

As schools and universities continue to adopt AI-driven tools, educators and students alike are grappling with how to strike the right balance between technological advancement and traditional learning methods. Ensuring that AI supports education without compromising its foundational goals remains a top priority for academic institutions worldwide.
