Tesla Begins Internal Testing of Robotaxi Service in Austin and Bay Area

Tesla has begun internally testing its autonomous ride-hailing service with company employees in Austin, Texas, and the San Francisco Bay Area, according to recent reports. The tests are part of the company’s ongoing efforts to develop and refine its robotaxi platform ahead of a broader public launch.

The internal trials are being used to gather performance data, assess the reliability of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, and fine-tune operational processes before introducing the service to consumers. This marks a significant milestone for Tesla as it moves closer to launching its long-awaited robotaxi network.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously stated that the company aims to unveil a dedicated robotaxi vehicle by 2024. These early employee trials indicate progress towards that goal, although regulatory approval and technical validation remain key hurdles before the service can be offered to the public.

Tesla’s autonomous service is expected to compete with similar offerings from companies like Waymo and Cruise, both of which have already launched limited commercial robotaxi services in certain U.S. cities. The outcome of these internal tests will likely influence Tesla’s ability to scale its ride-hailing operations nationwide and internationally in the coming years.
