Alibaba Launches Qwen 3 AI Model Amid Intensifying Competition in China

Alibaba Group introduced Qwen 3 on Tuesday, an advanced iteration of its main artificial intelligence (AI) model. This latest version brings new hybrid reasoning features designed to improve the model’s performance across multiple types of tasks, reaffirming the company’s commitment to AI innovation.

The announcement comes during a period of increased competition within China’s AI sector. The technology landscape has seen growing momentum following the early 2024 success of DeepSeek, a domestic startup that claimed it had developed high-performing AI models capable of operating at lower costs than Western alternatives.

In response to these developments, other major Chinese tech firms are progressing with their own AI initiatives. Baidu, another industry leader, released its own upgraded models—Ernie 4.5 Turbo and the specialized reasoning-focused Ernie X1 Turbo—just last week, marking its latest entry into the escalating AI race.

The release of Qwen 3 underscores the intensifying focus on next-generation AI capabilities among China’s largest technology companies, as they seek to establish leadership in this rapidly evolving sector.
